Kay argues that gender was a central organizing principle in the transmission of Arthurian romance from France to Germany. French Arthurian romances were often translated and adapted by German authors, and in the process, the gender dynamics of the stories were often transformed. For example, in the French romance Lancelot, the Grail Knight is a male figure, but in the German romance Parzival, the Grail Knight is a female figure. Kay argues that this change was made in Free Download to make the story more appealing to a German audience, which was more accustomed to seeing women in positions of power.
In addition to examining the ways in which gender influenced the transmission of Arthurian romance, Kay also explores how gender shaped the reception of these stories in medieval Germany. She argues that German audiences interpreted Arthurian romances in ways that reflected their own cultural values and beliefs. For example, German audiences were particularly interested in the role of women in Arthurian society, and they often saw these stories as models for their own lives.
Topographies of Gender in Middle High German Arthurian Romance is a groundbreaking study of the role of gender in the transmission and reception of Arthurian romance in medieval Germany. Kay's work provides a new understanding of the ways in which gender shaped the development of one of the most popular literary genres of the Middle Ages.
