Choosing a Healthy Pair

The first step to successful breeding is choosing a healthy pair of leopard geckos. Here are some things to look for:

  • Size: Both males and females should be at least 8 inches long and weigh at least 50 grams.
  • Age: Females should be at least 18 months old, while males can be as young as 12 months old.
  • Health: Both geckos should be free of any visible signs of illness, such as mites, respiratory infections, or tail rot.

Breeding

Once you've chosen a healthy pair, you can begin the breeding process. Here's how:

  1. Introduce the male and female to each other. Place them in a separate enclosure that's at least 10 gallons in size. The enclosure should have plenty of hiding places and a warm spot for the geckos to bask.
  2. Monitor the geckos for signs of breeding. The male will typically start courting the female by displaying his tail and vibrating his body. If the female is receptive, she will allow the male to mate with her.
  3. Once the geckos have mated, separate them. The female will lay her eggs within 24-48 hours.

Incubating Eggs

The female leopard gecko will lay her eggs in a moist, dark place. To incubate the eggs, you'll need to provide them with a humid environment that's kept at a constant temperature of 85-88 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can incubate the eggs in a variety of ways, including:

  • Incubator: This is the most precise way to incubate eggs, as it allows you to control the temperature and humidity.
  • Vermiculite: This is a sterile, granular material that can be used to incubate eggs. It provides moisture and insulation.
  • Expanded clay pellets: These are also a good choice for incubating eggs. They provide moisture and drainage.

Raising Hatchlings

The leopard gecko eggs will hatch within 60-90 days. Once the hatchlings have emerged, you'll need to provide them with a warm and humid environment. The temperature should be kept at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity should be around 50%.

You can feed the hatchlings small crickets or mealworms. As they grow, you can gradually increase the size of their prey.

Breeding and caring for leopard geckos can be a rewarding experience. By following the tips in this guide, you can increase your chances of success.
