Eliot Spitzer was once the golden boy of New York politics. A crusading prosecutor who took on Wall Street, he was elected governor in 2006 with a landslide victory. But just two years later, he was forced to resign in disgrace after it was revealed that he had been patronizing a prostitution ring.
In Client, The, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist James B. Stewart tells the rise and fall of Eliot Spitzer. Stewart paints a vivid portrait of a brilliant and ambitious man who was ultimately undone by his own hubris.
Spitzer was born into a wealthy family in the Bronx. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a prominent socialite. Spitzer attended Harvard Law School, where he was a classmate of Barack Obama. After graduating, he worked as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's office.
In 1998, Spitzer was elected New York State Attorney General. As Attorney General, he made a name for himself by taking on Wall Street. He investigated insider trading and other financial crimes, and he won several high-profile cases against major banks.
In 2006, Spitzer was elected Governor of New York. He ran on a platform of reform, promising to clean up Albany and to make New York a more just and equitable state. Spitzer's governorship began with great promise. He passed a number of important reforms, including a ban on gifts from lobbyists and a new ethics code for state employees.
But Spitzer's governorship was also marked by controversy. He was criticized for his handling of the 2008 financial crisis, and he was accused of being too close to Wall Street. In 2008, it was revealed that Spitzer had been patronizing a prostitution ring. Spitzer resigned in disgrace just a few months later.
Client, The is a fascinating and tragic story. Stewart tells the story of a brilliant man who was ultimately undone by his own flaws. The book is a cautionary tale about the dangers of hubris and the importance of integrity.
If you are interested in politics, New York history, or the rise and fall of powerful men, then you will want to read Client, The. It is a gripping and unforgettable story.
