Forging Democracy in the Wild Wild East: A Journey Through the Post-Soviet Landscape
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new one for the countries of the former USSR. These countries, once part of a totalitarian empire, were suddenly faced with the task of building democracies from scratch.
The transition to democracy in the post-Soviet space has been a tumultuous one, marked by both challenges and triumphs. In this book, I explore the complex journey of these countries as they navigate a path toward self-governance and the rule of law.

- Economic instability: The collapse of the Soviet economy led to widespread poverty and unemployment in the post-Soviet countries. This made it difficult for these countries to invest in the institutions and infrastructure necessary for democracy.
- Political instability: The post-Soviet countries also experienced a great deal of political instability. This instability was due to a number of factors, including the rise of ethnic nationalism, the emergence of new political parties, and the weakness of democratic institutions.
- Corruption: Corruption was a major problem in the post-Soviet countries. This corruption undermined public trust in the government and made it difficult to implement reforms.
Despite the challenges they faced, the post-Soviet countries have made significant progress in their transition to democracy. These triumphs include:
- The establishment of democratic institutions: The post-Soviet countries have established a number of democratic institutions, including parliaments, presidencies, and judiciaries. These institutions have helped to provide a framework for the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
- The holding of free and fair elections: The post-Soviet countries have held a number of free and fair elections. These elections have allowed citizens to choose their leaders and have helped to legitimize the new democratic governments.
- The growth of civil society: Civil society has played a vital role in the transition to democracy in the post-Soviet countries. Non-governmental organizations have helped to promote democracy, protect human rights, and provide social services.
The future of democracy in the post-Soviet space is uncertain. The region faces a number of challenges, including the rise of authoritarianism, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the economic challenges posed by the global pandemic. However, the post-Soviet countries have also made significant progress in their transition to democracy. These countries have established democratic institutions, held free and fair elections, and grown civil society. These achievements provide a foundation for the future of democracy in the region.
The transition to democracy in the post-Soviet space has been a complex and challenging one. However, these countries have made significant progress in their journey toward self-governance and the rule of law. The future of democracy in the region is uncertain, but the post-Soviet countries have a strong foundation on which to build.
