In her first novel since the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Lowland, Lahiri turns her attention to the equally complex and challenging terrain of familial relationships. Unaccustomed Earth is a moving and perceptive story about a family in transition, struggling to come to terms with the loss of a loved one and the challenges of living in a rapidly changing world.
The novel begins with the sudden death of Usha, the matriarch of the Ghosh family. Usha was the glue that held her family together, and her death leaves a void that her husband and children struggle to fill. As the family gathers for her funeral in their ancestral home in Calcutta, old tensions and resentments resurface.
Usha's husband, Amit, is a retired university professor who is struggling to cope with the loss of his beloved wife. He finds solace in his work, but he is also haunted by the memories of their life together. Amit's children, Ila and Rahul, are both successful in their own right, but they are also grappling with their own personal demons.
Ila is a doctor who has recently separated from her husband. She is struggling to come to terms with her failed marriage and her newfound independence. Rahul is a businessman who is struggling to find meaning in his work. He is also haunted by the memory of his childhood friend, who died tragically when they were young.
As the family members navigate their grief and their own personal struggles, they are also forced to confront the changing world around them. Calcutta is a city in flux, and the family home is a symbol of a bygone era. The family is struggling to find their place in this new world, and they are all searching for a sense of belonging.
Unaccustomed Earth is a beautifully written and deeply moving novel about the complexities of familial relationships and the search for connection in a rapidly changing world. Lahiri is a master storyteller, and she has created a cast of characters that is both relatable and unforgettable. This is a novel that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
