About the Author

Stendhal, the pen name of Marie-Henri Beyle, was a French novelist and short story writer. He is considered one of the greatest writers of the 19th century and is best known for his novels The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma.

Stendhal was born in Grenoble, France, in 1783. He served in the Napoleonic army and later traveled extensively throughout Europe. His experiences in the military and his travels gave him a firsthand understanding of the social and political issues of his time, which he explored in his writing.

Stendhal died in Paris in 1842. He is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, where his grave is a popular destination for literary pilgrims.
