The SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) role is a vital one in any school. They are responsible for ensuring that all pupils with special educational needs (SEN) have access to the support they need to achieve their potential.

The SENCO role is a complex and challenging one, but it is also a rewarding one. SENCOs make a real difference to the lives of the pupils they support.

What does a SENCO do?

The SENCO's role is to:

  • Identify and assess pupils with SEN
  • Develop and implement support plans for pupils with SEN
  • Monitor the progress of pupils with SEN
  • Liaise with parents/carers of pupils with SEN
  • Provide training and support for staff on SEN issues
  • Work with external agencies to provide support for pupils with SEN

The SENCO role is a varied one, and no two days are the same. SENCOs need to be able to work independently and as part of a team. They need to be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including pupils, parents/carers, staff, and external agencies.

What are the qualities of an effective SENCO?

Effective SENCOs are:

  • Knowledgeable about SEN
  • Skilled in assessment and planning
  • Able to communicate effectively
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Passionate about inclusion
  • Committed to lifelong learning

If you are interested in a career as a SENCO, there are a number of training courses available. You can also find out more about the role by visiting the National Association for Special Educational Needs (nasen) website.

The importance of the SENCO role

The SENCO role is a vital one in any school. SENCOs play a key role in ensuring that all pupils with SEN have access to the support they need to achieve their potential.

SENCOs make a real difference to the lives of the pupils they support. They help pupils to overcome barriers to learning and to reach their full potential.

If you are a parent/carer of a child with SEN, you should feel confident in approaching the SENCO at your child's school. The SENCO will be able to provide you with information and support, and will work with you to develop a support plan for your child.

The SENCO role is a challenging but rewarding one. SENCOs play a vital role in ensuring that all pupils with SEN have access to the support they need to achieve their potential.

If you are interested in a career as a SENCO, I encourage you to learn more about the role and to consider taking a training course.
