Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America is a classic work of political and social theory that offers a penetrating analysis of the American experiment in democracy. This volume explores the influence of manners and opinions on the government of the United States. Tocqueville argues that the unique character of American society—its individualism, its egalitarianism, and its religious fervor—has shaped the development of American institutions and has had a profound impact on the functioning of its government.
Tocqueville's insights into American society are as relevant today as they were when he first wrote them in the 1830s. His analysis of the relationship between democracy and individualism, between equality and liberty, and between religion and politics remains essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the American experience.
In this volume, Tocqueville examines:
- The influence of manners on the laws and institutions of the United States
- The role of religion in American society
- The impact of public opinion on the government
- The strengths and weaknesses of American democracy
Tocqueville's writing is both insightful and eloquent, and his observations about American society are still remarkably accurate today. Democracy in America is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the United States and its place in the world.

Tocqueville was born into a noble family in Normandy, France. He studied law and entered the civil service. In 1831, he was sent to the United States to study the American prison system. His experiences in the United States led him to write Democracy in America, which was published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840.
Tocqueville's work is still widely read today and has had a profound influence on political thought in both the United States and Europe. He is considered one of the most important thinkers of the 19th century.
